The iPhone 4 default cellular reception indicator is a series of zero to five bars. Generally, the more bars you have the better. However, if you’d like a more precise display of your cellular signal strength, the bars can be converted to an actual number.

The numerical indicator is represented as a negative number in dBm units. The larger the number (e.g., -74) the better your signal strength. Conversely, the smaller the number (e.g., -100) the poorer your signal strength. The useful range is somewhere between -60 dBm and -105 dBm.

Please note: The following has been tested only on an AT&T-based iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1.

How to change cellular reception indicator from bars to actual number

  1. Launch the Phone application.
  2. Select the Keypad option to show the Phone keypad.
  3. Enter the following code verbatim on the keypad: *3001#12345#*.
  4. Press Call.
  5. The Field Test app will appear.
  6. In the Field Test app, tap the top left corner of the screen to switch the reception indicator from bars to a number.
  7. Once a number is displayed instead of bars hold the Sleep/Wake button until the iPhone displays the red slide to power off screen.
  8. Do not power off the iPhone.
  9. Hold down the Home button until the Power Off screen disappears.
  10. Verify a number has replaced bars in the reception indicator area.
  11. To switch back back to bars repeat steps 1 to 5 and then press the Home button.
